Blue Planet Fund Programme: Design Analysis and Recommendations

Project Aim:

To support the design of the Blue Planet Fund, a key global initiative in managing our ocean and reducing poverty.

Project Outcome:

The development of interventions supported by the BPF that will reduce poverty and protect the marine environment across small scale fisheries, sustainable aquaculture, ocean management capacity and critical marine habitats for coastal resilience.

The Blue Planet Fund (BPF), funded by UK Official Development Assistance (ODA), will contribute to the UK’s pledge to provide £3 billion of financing for nature as part of the UK’s International Climate Finance (ICF) commitment.

In developing a fund to support ambitious and transformational change, the UK is looking to shift the dial in the developing world. The BPF will support target countries to establish laws, regulations, and planning capabilities and direct funding towards the holistic and inclusive management of their seas and marine economies. This, in turn, will support mechanisms and projects that reduce pressures on the marine environment, promote poverty alleviation and deliver sustainable livelihoods, particularly for those most vulnerable to the impacts of environmental change.

HMC, working with IMC Worldwide and DAI Global, led a team of experts to support the FCDO in designing the geographic scope and interventions of the BPF Coast programme and identifying alignment with existing global initiatives. We designed interventions that will reduce poverty and protect the marine environment across small scale fisheries, sustainable aquaculture, ocean management capacity and critical marine habitats for coastal resilience.

Key messages:

  • HMC, working with IMC Worldwide and DAI Global, led a team of experts to support the design of the Blue Planet Fund, a key global initiative in managing our ocean and reducing poverty
  • Our expertise will be used to develop interventions across small scale fisheries, sustainable aquaculture, ocean management capacity and critical marine habitats for coastal resilience
