Senior Consultant – Research Impact

Your Role

As a Senior Consultant, you will play a key role in bridging the gap between research and implementation. You will support the design and delivery of impactful programmes, help shape evidence-based policy and investment decisions, and contribute to strengthening the influence of marine science in practice.
This role is well-suited to someone who is looking to take the next step in their consultancy career. You will be supported to develop your project management, business development, and technical skills, with increasing responsibility over time.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Delivering projects focused on research translation and impact, including:
  • Evidence synthesis, literature reviews, and translating findings into actionable insights
  • Monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL)
  • Research programme design and delivery
  • Stakeholder engagement and knowledge exchange
  • Impact assessment and reporting
• Supporting clients to embed evidence into policy, strategy, and investment decisions
• Supporting and increasingly leading project management activities, working alongside the Research Impact Manager to ensure high-quality delivery
• Contributing to the design of research and innovation programmes, including funding schemes and strategic initiatives
• Supporting and contributing to high-quality bids, with opportunities to take on greater responsibility over time
• Building and maintaining relationships with research institutions, government bodies, and industry partners
• Supporting, and over time, representing HMC externally at events, forums, and client meetings
• Developing your profile and contributing to thought leadership in research impact, environmental evidence, and science-policy interfaces
• Contributing to internal discussions on research strategy, methods, and best practice

Qualifications

• Relevant qualifications in marine science, environmental management, or related disciplines
• Experience working in research, consultancy, or policy environments, or related fields (we welcome candidates from a range of professional backgrounds)
• Strong analytical and synthesis skills, with the ability to translate complex evidence into practical insights
• Understanding of how evidence informs policy, strategy, and investment decisions
• Strong project management, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills.

 Package

The package for this role includes:

• Agreed salary on the pay scale which is set between £35,000 and £40,000 (pro rata if part time) and increased in line with HMC’s performance-related salary increase structure
• An annual bonus of up to 10% of your annual salary will be paid upon HMC reaching agreed profitability targets
• Contributions to a company pension scheme in line with statutory requirements
• 28 days of paid holiday per annum (pro rata if part time)
• Office equipment to allow home working including:
  • Computer (MacBook Air)
  • Workstation if required (e.g. adjustable table and chair)
  • Mobile Phone (iPhone)
